“Abington SD Resources for Your Gifted Student & GIEP Refresher”

Kathy Christiana will present the new brochure of opportunities available for gifted students in the district. This brochure was a result of the Superintendent’s Committee for Gifted Ed that met during the 2009-2010 school year. The actual Action Plan description was “Create a brochure for parents that highlights the gifted programs and enrichment/honors opportunities at the elementary and secondary schools.” She will also speak briefly about the GIEP process and parents can find out how this brochure can relate to the GIEP.
Janine Sack will present on the changes to the JH gifted course from Critical Reading to Critical Thinking. Action Plan description: “…revise the Critical Reading for the Gifted curriculum to include extension enrichment activities and a cross-disciplinary seminar format.”
Dr. Matt Wexler will talk about the reassignment of the single gifted guidance counselor as they have had for the past 3 years and the change to spreading the gifted students among various guidance counselors.

Rose Jacobs comes with a varied background in gifted education and education in general. She is the parent of a 25 year old gifted child, a reading specialist and a former member of the Bensalem Board of School Directors. She is the eastern regional coordinator for PA Association for Gifted Education (PAGE) affiliates as well as past presidents of the Bensalem PAGE affiliate and has been very helpful getting AGEPAC off the ground. She also answers the PAGE helpline and was 2003 PAGE Parent of the Year.
Come prepared with questions for Rose. She is very knowledgeable and practical!

Information about enrichment in the schools as well as in the community. Also, information about the new graduation tests being phased in by the state as well as new standards being developed by the state.
There will be time for discussions and planning for next year.
We will have activities for school aged children provided by high school students.

Lita Linzer Schwartz, Ph.D., taught at Penn State Ogontz (now Penn State Abington) for more than 30 years, and is now Distinguished Professor Emerita. She has written more than 20 books and dozens of articles in the fields of gifted and talented, adoption and child custody, and many others. On the personal side, she is the mother of 3 sons and grandmother of 3 middle-school-aged children, and is an active photographer.

April 26, 2010 "Myths, Misconceptions and FAQs about Acceleration" by Psychologist Mary Ann Swiatek, PhD
- What are the various forms of acceleration? (Acceleration is not just "grade-skipping.)
- What are the social, emotional, and academic consequences? What is the research on the effects on friendships and self-concept?
- What are the specific factors to consider in deciding whether acceleration is appropriate for a given student?
October 12, 2009 "The Gifted Child: Parenting and Schooling Considerations"
On October 12, Dr. LoGiudice spoke to AGEPAC about some of the basic traits and characteristics of gifted children, and what parents and schools need to know and do to develop their unique potential. What are the myths and truths about these kids, and what are some realistic expectations about their behavior and learning? The presenter has taught interviewed, and counseled thousands of these students at all grade levels - and worked with the same amount of teachers and school leaders to develop programs to challenge these gifted. He shared his insight and experience, and also touched on some of the Pennsylvania legal rights that affect their education. Watch a video of the presentation.
